Match.com

Match.com is one of the world’s best-known dating sites, with a large user base and a finely tuned algorithm to help pair up singles. Creating a profile only takes a few minutes and – crucially – it’s a simple process, which means that even those who feel a little overwhelmed by modern dating can navigate the platform.

Overall, this is one of the best online dating sites and apps that’s available. You can set yourself up with a profile in under five minutes, there are plenty of singles to browse and Match.com we found that we averaged 10 matches within the first 24 hours and received 14 messages.

There are a couple of drawbacks. You can’t message other members unless you have a paid subscription and the profile building feels restrictive. But given that Match.com has a fairly decent success rate (there are thousands of success stories available to browse on the site) we reckon it’s worth splashing out if you’re still searching for the one.

Match.com: Best features

Match.com is one of the few dating platforms that offers a compatibility rating, which feels like a helpful way of narrowing down the field. When we tried it out, we found that the majority of our matches were rated at 80% compatibility or above, so the quality of the pairings is fairly high.

This rating is influenced by the information you provide when you sign up to the service, which relates to your own physical appearance and personality traits, along with some extra details about what you’re looking for in a partner. You can also say if something is a deal-breaker for you, so if you want kids one day you’ll be paired with a single member who feels the same way.

In theory, this should mean that you can find ideal matches, with good compatibility ratings. However, if you want to browse a few profiles before you really dive into the process, you can opt to withhold this information and start a session in ‘incognito’ mode. This is a clever way to assess whether or not there’s a good dating scene near you before committing to the process. When we tested out three different profiles, we found between 10 and 11 matches over 24 hours, but these numbers could vary by location and dating preferences.

Prior to the outbreak of Covid-19, Match.com hosted a lot of in-person events for its members, including cocktails evenings and bowling sessions. These are on hold for now, but you do have the option of having a virtual video date on the platform instead.

Match.com is also available as an easy-to-use app, Match.com which functions in a similar fashion to Tinder (lots of profile swiping.) It also has a ‘stories’ mode, so you can build a little video to show users what you’re doing throughout the day.

Match.com: The drawbacks

The biggest drawback on the site is the messaging system. In brief, you need to have a paid subscription to message other users. If a paying member messages you, you can see that they’ve messaged but you can’t read what they’ve written. This is a little frustrating, which is why we recommend you try the free version to start with then upgrade if you’re confident that there are some good matches in your area.

It’s also worth pointing out that the age range of users on Match.com leans towards the 30 - 49 bracket. In 2015, Match.com reported that there were 2.39 million users in North America, of which 52% were aged between 30 - 49. A recent report from Statista suggests that this is still broadly the case, with the majority of users falling into the 30 - 44 bracket.

Another small flaw is the profile building system. Although you’re given free rein to write out your profile, you only have a predetermined. Number of ‘interests’ you can choose for your account, such as “coffee and conversation” or “playing cards”. We prefer options like those used on eHarmony and Plenty of Fish. Which gives you the option to answer questions about your personality and interests on a sliding scale.

It’s also not the ideal platform for bisexual singles. As it only gives users the option to state one gender in your preferences. Match.com states that it can accommodate this, if you contact the customer care team, but it’s a minor annoyance to have to do this rather than just entering the details off the bat.

Is Match.com safe?

The final thing to mention here is that in 2019. The FTC accused Match.com of allowing fake user profiles to proliferate. Which enticed real users to subscribe via deceptive means. In response to this, Match.com said that the FTC had “cherry-picked” data and that. It had a robust system in place to combat fake profiles. Which accurately identified and block 96% of fake profiles within 24 hours of their creation.

In general, most people report positive experiences. With Match.com and the site has certainly made it easy to block users and report inappropriate behaviours. Unfortunately, as with all dating sites. There are still romance scams that you need to guard against. But we found no evidence to suggest that these incidents. Were more prolific on Match.com than elsewhere.

  • Very fake e-mails from robot women. What a joke! I paid real money to communicate with fake profiles.

  • Just have to keep talking. Best to talk to the people who just entered this site. People who have been on this site awhile don’t talk or have left and moved on to other methods

  • Filled with fake profiles and now my account was hacked and someone has uploaded their pictures and email to my account, but have assumed my description and I’m paying for the subscription….good luck trying to get customer service to look into it. This site is dodgy as hell.

  • It is terrible and will charge you money without you knowing. One has to manually go, find the option and disable it, otherwise one gets charged. As a new user it is impossible to know that this set-up is turned on by default. So, they are legally covered by having it on by default once you sign up and agree on the terms! So, be very careful! I was charged 60$ for not knowing that because I used some services, despite the fact that I had bought a premium service! The whole site does not allow you to use anything pretty much unless you pay. It’s a rip-off! Good luck!

  • Membership cancelled months ago. They reactivated my account without my consent and took money from my bank account

  • I just cancelled my membership so I asked them to speak to an manager or supervisor they play on the line for about 10 mins then hung up on me. So if I get charged for any of there other services I let it be known I will be doing a lawsuit I’m not playing. When you have no membership all the so called ladies are in ya inbox but when you get a membership you don’t see nun of em it’s all fake.

  • This site is such a bad deal. Never ever join this site if I was there when their ass was on fire I would not waste my piss to put it out. Never ever sign up at this site..

  • I joined the site To meet someone nice. All them and asked me my breast size, or were full of promises. One guy really likes sent me messages and songs. I rather fell for him but when my daughter ran him through the black dark web, turns out he was a complete scammer and fraud. I would not recommend this site to anyone it’s rubbish don’t pay the money

  • I’ve been on this site for about five months now. With few exceptions, all of the “men” I’ve met on this platform have misrepresented themselves. Most ask me to leave the platform so we can communicate by email/text. Many say that they’re reaching out on behalf of a friend, boss, etc. I’ve not had any dialogue to speak of and no in-person meetings. So not worth the money.

  • Sounded too good to be true, and now I know it is. Height is important to me, no one shorter than 5’8″ please – got lots of enquiries from men just over 5 ft. Matches must be close to me, i. E. within 15 miles – had matches from Scotland, Wales, Isle of Wight – I’m near Brighton. Their customer service is dreadful, just a load of excuses. Be warned – don; t sign up.

  • What a terrible service. I signed up and paid for 3 months and cancelled on day 3. They give you fake profiles, send you “stock” messages from supposed admirers. Lots of scammers trying to get your private info.

  • I subscribed for 1 month. I hid my profile after 2 weeks. Full of fake profiles and expired profiles. This site fills your inbox with bogus emails throughout the day. Pop ups constantly push you to buy further services. Their app is basic and not user friendly. 100s of men without smiles and you wonder if they even showered. Profiles lacked even basic information. My matches were never per my criteria!!!! Too many aged below 50. Search continually showed the same men. What a waste of both time and money.

  • SCAM SITE! Computerized responses. They try to keep you responding to the questions they ask. You have to purchase coins in order to communicate after your first or second initial text. BS site. Don’t waste your time.

  • Do NOT waste your time or money on this site. Let’s forget about the fact that most of the people on here are mouth breathers who are in desperate need of a bath. 2/3’s of the Top Picks on the site are NON-SUBSCRIBERS. If you are a subscriber and message a non subscriber they won’t receive your message unless they rejoined or YOU PAY FOR THEM to read it. Stupid. I wasn’t happy with their unethical business practices and so I not only canceled my subscription, but I also got a FULL REFUND. I’m sure most people don’t think it’s possible. Get your $ money back.
